At Charis' school, they have a Cultural Challenge towards the end of the year. It is a presentation done completely by the kids that highlight something that they love to do. The parents are asked not to coach the kids or pressure them in anyway. Normally only the older kids in her class are offered a spot in the presentation to perform solo performances but Charis' teachers knew this would be so fun for her and an area that she could shine.
So we asked her if she would like to do a performance and she immediately said "YES!". She wanted to sing and chose "Jumbo" - a song she learned last year at VBS. We did as asked and did not try to sway her decision. She asked to practice (on the church stage) a couple of times but then never asked again. It was hard not to ask her to practice or make sure she knew what to do.
Apparently, she would not even perform the whole song for her teachers during practice. But they told her that if she wanted to sing without practice she could.
She did great!!! I could not have been more proud of her. I love this side of her and will continue to look for ways to let her express herself.
