Charis wrote her first book!

When I got home from work, Charis had a surprise for me. She wrote a book! In Montessori, they teach writing (because it is active learning) first and then reading. So Charis has been doing lots of writing and some sounding out words to write them. Kris helped her with this project.They read this book today and Charis wanted to continue the story about what the mouse at the end of the story would do next.She is so clever and imaginative.

Charis' summer reading

Check out Charis' new summer reading list on the left side of the blog. I have decided to post only chapter books, otherwise it would be miles long. Charis was so excited to share what she is reading this summer with her friends and family. We go to the library every Wednesday after her vision therapy (kind of as a reward). She gets to pick at 5 to 10 books each week. We started and finished our first book today, it was a little on the short and easy side. But she really liked it.

Swimming at Gus Fruh

Kris and Skot rode Charis down to Gus Fruh to go swimming. I got her a life vest for swimming and she loves swimming by herself now. Charis was so excited about the rope swing that she swam across but then it turned out to be a little scary for her. So Kris just slowly lowered her into the water from the swing. They had a lot of fun.

Our friends, Momo and Peter from Japan left us this crazy Japanese bath dye.

Charis loved it, of course.

Charis' new creation

Charis' new food creation, peanut butter, banana and jelly tortilla.She is really a native Texan... they eat everything in a tortilla. She loved it!

Garage Sale

Charis and I held a garage sale to fund raise for Charis' school scholarship program. Lots of parents brought items to donate and on Friday and Saturday, Charis and I sold a lot of stuff. We raise $504! And had a little fun in the process.

Cultural Challenge

At Charis' school, they have a Cultural Challenge towards the end of the year. It is a presentation done completely by the kids that highlight something that they love to do. The parents are asked not to coach the kids or pressure them in anyway. Normally only the older kids in her class are offered a spot in the presentation to perform solo performances but Charis' teachers knew this would be so fun for her and an area that she could shine.So we asked her if she would like to do a performance and she immediately said "YES!". She wanted to sing and chose "Jumbo" - a song she learned last year at VBS. We did as asked and did not try to sway her decision. She asked to practice (on the church stage) a couple of times but then never asked again. It was hard not to ask her to practice or make sure she knew what to do.Apparently, she would not even perform the whole song for her teachers during practice. But they told her that if she wanted to sing without practice she could.She did great!!! I could not have been more proud of her. I love this side of her and will continue to look for ways to let her express herself.
